"Saturday was another chance for Kiwi Gardner, who shined during the Santa Cruz tryout on Oct. 6 at Kaiser Permanente Arena. Gardner, an Oakland native who was ruled ineligible while at Providence College and later attended Midland College in Texas as a result, was one of five players from the Santa Cruz tryout to be invited by Warriors staff to Oakland.
He was the only one of the five who returned to the second tryout, though. He made it through the mid-day cut.
"This is my heart. This is where I first picked up a basketball," Gardner said. "Playing for the NBA team would be crazy. But playing for its D-League affiliate, that would be a dream come true."
"It's just learning to be a better human," Gardner said, "beyond basketball."The undersized Gardner -- who is listed at 5-foot-10 -- described his journey as humbling. As a top high school player at Arizona's Westwind Prep, Gardner went from Providence to Texas to undrafted. He has tried out for just about every D-League team in the West, as well as Fort Wayne, and is hoping some team provides a second chance."
