Coach K's Northern California Men's JC Basketball Rankings - Week 6

You would think that as the season progresses it would be easier to determine which teams are deserving of the highest rankings, but in most cases this is still not the case.  It seems that a few top programs have emerged, while the rest of the field could be wide open.  It's still early, with plenty of big time tournaments coming up during December, so teams will get an opportunity to continue to compete for top rankings which will be vital come playoffs.    As always, please remember my rankings are for entertainment purposes only.  My rankings are not affiliated in any way with the CCCAA or any other affiliation.   Thanks for reading.

1) Feather River (14-0)   (-)
Remains as Northern California's only unbeaten team.  Took home the Foothill Championship with wins over Napa, Santa Rosa, and Foothill.  Is back in action December 17th vs. Napa to open the Santa Rosa Tournament.

2) Chabot (8-2)   (+2)
Picked up the signature win it needed by defeating Cabrillo by 20 over the weekend.  Their only two losses were to Feather River, and they are the only team in my 2-5 rankings to pick up a W against a 2-5 team.  So at this point they will move up.  This week they have an opportunity to show they belong this high as they begin the 16 Team Modesto Tournament with an opening round game vs. Contra Costa on Tuesday.

3) San Francisco (11-1)   (-1)
Figured I'd shake my rankings up a bit by moving Chabot over CCSF in this week's rankings.  CCSF's early victories over Yuba and Mt. San Antonio don't seem to be as impressive as those teams have both struggled to losing records so far this season.  They still have victories over Fresno and Santa Rosa, two teams that are still heavily in the mix and could win their conferences as well.  CCSF will open up the Delta Tournament vs. Sierra on Dec 18th.

4) Cabrillo (7-2)   (-1)
Drops one spot after losing to Chabot over the weekend on the road.  Received 2 first place votes in last weeks coaches poll, so they seem to have garnered quite a bit of attention this far.  Will be back in action vs. Merced to open up the Delta Tournament on December 18th.

5) Las Positas (9-5)   (+2)
Not as impressive a record as some other teams, but has won 6 in a row after winning two tournaments in as many weekends.  During this span they gave both Bakersfield and Santa Monica their 2nd loss of the season, as well as defeating DVC on their home floor.  I tend to skew my rankings for how teams are performing currently, as this is what matters most as the season progresses.  So Las Positas makes the Top 5 and represents the third team from the Coast-North Conference in my Top 5.

6) Santa Rosa (7-4)   (-1)
Drops one spot after a solid weekend, picking up third place in the Foothill Tournament.  Picked up wins over De Anza and Butte while dropping to Feather River on the second night.  If they get hot behind the arc they can compete with anyone.  Will be one of the favorites to win the Big 8 this year in a tough group of contenders.

7) Fresno City (7-5)   (+1)
Benefits from Butte dropping in the rankings.  Had the week off last week, but will jump right back into it this week as they open up the 16 Team Modesto Tournament vs. Pima (Az) on Dec 16th.

8) Los Medanos (8-2)   (+1)
Had the week off and capitalizes on Butte dropping in the rankings.  Has started with a nice record, but has yet to have any signature wins under their belt.  That being said, they still have won games against some solid competition.  Will be back in action on Dec 17th vs. Santa Rosa in the Santa Rosa Tournament. This will be their toughest game of the season and a chance to show if they deserve a higher ranking.
.
9) Foothill (7-4)   (NR)
Jumps into the rankings after picking up a quality win over Butte over the weekend on way to a second place finish in their own tournament.  Has gone 7-2 since starting the season 0-2.  Also picked up a solid victory over Delta over the weekend.  Will be back in action on Dec 17th vs. Santa Monica at the West Valley Holiday Classic.

10) Cosumnes River (5-3)   (+2)
Took the week off last week, but was able to capitalize on a couple teams dropping in the rankings.  2 of their losses were to #1 Feather River, and has finished 2nd in their two tournament showings so far.  Is another team that could compete at the top of the Big 8 once conference play begins. Will have a chance to go up against more top competition in the 16 Team Modesto Tournament this weekend, where they open up against Ohlone on Dec 15th.

11) Columbia (7-3)   (-)
Holds solid at #11 this week while they had the week off.  Most recent wins have them posting victories over Butte and also Modesto.  Is on a five game winning streak as they head up to Modesto for the 16 Team Tournament where they will open up with Mendocino on Dec 16th.

12) Monterey (7-5)   (NR)
Has gone 5-1 in their last 6 games, giving them enough momentum to earn a top 15 spot in my rankings.  Has a couple solid wins over Los Medanos and Foothill this year that give them credibility.  Will have a chance to prove themselves more as they will open up the  West Valley Tournament against DVC on Dec 17th.

13) Diablo Valley (7-4)   (-3)
Drops three spots in my rankings after going 3-2 in their last five games.  Has a solid argument to be ranked much higher with wins over Shasta, Foothill and Cabrillo so far this year.   Had wins over Alameda & Ohlone over the weekend, but lost to Merritt in a low scoring affair. Is another team that could legitimately compete for the Big 8 crown this year. Will be back in action vs. Monterey on Dec 17th to open the West Valley Tournament.

14) Sacramento City (6-3)   (-1)
Was idle last week, but drops a spot with a couple teams moving up in the rankings.  Gave Feather River a big scare and also has a solid win over Las Positas early this season.  Will be another addition to the 16 Team field of the Modesto Tournament, where they open up vs. Sacramento City on Dec 15th.

15) Butte (6-4)   (-9)
Drops nine spots in my rankings after going 2-4 in their last six games.  Two of these games were close ones, going into OT, which might be the one thing that helped me decide to keep them in the Top 15.  Is a very good team and will be able to compete for the Golden Valley Conference title, but needs a shift in momentum.  They have played a pretty solid schedule so far, with 7 of their 10 games coming against teams that made my Top 15 rankings.  However, they are 3-4 against these same teams.   Will be back in action vs. Delta in the San Joaquin Delta Tournament on Dec 13th.

Coach K's Northern California Men's JC Basketball Rankings - Week 5

As more and more games play out some teams are starting to put their heads above the crowd.  Below is my unofficial rankings for Northern California JC Men's Basketball, for Week 5.
Please remember, our rankings are in no way affiliated with the CCCAA. Our rankings are for entertainment and educational purposes only.  Thanks for reading.

1)  Feather River College (11-0)  (+1)
FRC has been on a tear this season and is the only team in Northern California to remain undefeated. They move up one spot from my previous ranking. They currently own two victories over Chabot, and a CRC Tournament Championship from last weekend.  They are back in action this week at the Foothill Tournament where they will open up against Napa.

2) City College of San Francisco  (10-1)    (-1)
CCSF moves down one spot after holding the #1 spot for all my previous rankings.  Even if CCSF would have remained unbeaten after the Mt. San Antonio Tournament I probably would have still placed them at #2.  CCSF has had a very solid start to the season after winning their own tournament, the Fresno City Tournament and a third place finish at the Mt. San Antonio Tournament where they picked up victories over Orange Coast & Merritt.  Their sole loss of the season was to Moorpark in the second round over the the weekend.  CCSF is back in action against Hartnell this Thursday.

3) Cabrillo (7-1)    (+2)
Cabrillo has moved up two spots from my previous ranking.  They have won four in a row, and their only loss this year was to DVC.  They have played a solid schedule and will continue that trend as they will travel to Chabot this Saturday.

4) Chabot (6-2)    (+3)
Chabot moves up three spots, capitalizing on other teams falling in the rankings.  They were up against Feather River at half, but couldn't get it done as they fell for the second time this year to my #1 ranked team.  They have the talent to continue their upward climb in the rankings, and they will get a chance to prove they should be a top 4 team as they face Napa & Cabrillo this week.

5) Santa Rosa (5-3)   (-2)
SRJC falls two spots in my rankings after going 2-2 in their last 4 games.  The loss to Marin at home could have hurt SRJC even more, but no other team seems to have a better argument for a top 5 spot in my opinion.  They still own a signature victory over Fresno which could be a big one should Fresno be able to turn things around.  Santa Rosa is back in action vs. De Anza in the first round of the Foothill Tournament this week.

6) Butte (5-2)  (-2)
Has fallen two spots after going 1-2 in their last three games.  Took Cabrillo into OT and lost to Columbia at home before getting back to the winning column over De Anza.  Butte is back in action vs. Contra Costa this weekend to open the Foothill Tournament.

7) Las Positas (6-5)  (NR)
Las Positas jumps into the rankings after taking home the tournament championship in a very solid DVC Tournament.  They defeated Sequoias, DVC and gave Santa Monica their 2nd loss of the season during their three game win streak.  Las Positas is back in action Dec 11th vs. Gavilan to open the Skyline Tournament.

8) Fresno City (7-5)   (-3)
Has played a solid schedule, but FCC is usually a team that thrives early in the year.  They are 4-4 in their last 8 games and have dropped 3 spots in my rankings.  They have some time off to work some things out before they begin the loaded Modesto Tournament where they will face Pima, AZ in the first round of a tough bracket.

9) Los Medanos  (8-2)   (-1)
Drops just one spot in my rankings after an impressive start to the season.  Has faced some decent competition this year, but gets a chance to prove themselves in their next three tournaments.  They open up against Santa Rosa in the Santa Rosa Tournament on Dec 17th for their next game.

10) Diablo Valley  (5-3)   (NR)
DVC jumps back into the rankings after a solid couple of weeks. They are 5-1 in their last 6 games, and own the only victory over Cabrillo so far this year.  Other key wins are Shasta & Foothill during this span.  DVC is back in action this week vs. Alameda to start the San Jose City Tournament.

11) Columbia (7-3)   (NR)
Jumps into the rankings after racking up 5 wins (even though 2 were against JV teams).  Their wins against non-JV teams were impressive, as they defeated Modesto, Butte & Gavilan.  Columbia has some time off to prepare for the 16 team Modesto Tournament.  They will open up against Mendocino on Dec. 16th.

12) Cosumnes River  (5-3)   (+1)
Moves up a spot in my rankings after earning a 2nd place finish in the Mendocino Tournament and it's own Cosumnes River James Clark Classic.  CRC has the week off before they head over to Modesto where they will open up against Ohlone in the 16 team tournament.

13) Sacramento City  (6-3)   (+1)
Moves up a spot in our rankings as they took the consolation in the CRC James Clark Classic over the weekend.  Took Feather River to the brink before defeating Merced and Siskiyous over the weekend.  Sacramento City is another team that will be back in action for the Modesto Tournament, where they will open up against Allan Hancock on Dec 15th.

14) Foothill (5-3)  (NR)
Are 5-1 in their last 6 games.  Will be back in action vs. Delta in the Foothill tournament this weekend.

15) Shasta (7-3)  (-)
Hold solid at my #15 spot as they have had an impressive start this year.  They will be back in action on Dec 18th vs. Sequoias.

Coach K's Northern California Men's JC Basketball Rankings - Week 2

After an exciting week 2 of California Junior College basketball I have come out with Coach K's rankings for Northern California Men's JC basketball.  With a few solid tournaments around NorCal it is getting a little easier to see which teams are among NorCal's best this year.  The ranking will be followed by their current season record along with their change from my previous ranking.
This ranking is solely for entertainment and educational purposes only, and is in no way affiliated with the CCCAA or any other association.  It is purely my opinion based on my discussions from around the basketball community and my own personal observations and gut feeling.  I appreciate you taking the time to read our blog.

#1 CCSF (6-0)  (-)
Continues to prove they are the current top team in the North by winning another loaded tournament, this time down in Fresno.  Escaped a close one against West Hills (71-68) before taking out Santa Rosa (73-63) & Mt. San Antonio (80-60).  Next game is against De Anza on November 20th.

#2 Feather River (6-0)   (+3)
Moves up 3 spots after an impressive showing at the Chabot Tip-Off tournament this past weekend.  Defeated Marin (97-82), Chabot (97-87), and escaped De Anza (79-77) to finish the weekend with a perfect record.  Derrick Randolph scores in bunches and the rest of the Golden Eagles overwhelm opponents with their athleticism.  Feather River should stay at the top of the rankings the rest of the season with the talent they showcased this past weekend.  Next up they face Simpson JV on November 18th.

#3 Santa Rosa (4-2)  (+3)
Moves up 3 spots from last week’s rankings. Is starting to look like the favorite to win the Big 8 right now after a solid start to the season. Playing in two tough tournaments so far, they have solid wins under their belt.  Owns wins over Mt. San Antonio and also Fresno City, with their two losses coming to CCSF and Fresno.  If they are hot behind the arc, they can beat anyone.  They have a couple weeks off before they face Mendocino on December 1st

#4 Butte (3-0)   (-)
Had the week off after winning the Las Positas tournament.  Next game is vs. Simpson JV on November 23rd

#5 Cabrillo (3-0)    (+2)
Moves up 2 spots in my rankings. Stayed perfect after defeating Las Positas last week (71-66).  We should get a better idea on if they deserve this high of a ranking as they face Diablo Valley next in the first round of the Shasta Tournament on November 20th

#6 Fresno City (3-3)     (-4)
Falls 4 spots from my rankings last week. Record is at .500 but has played a tougher schedule than anyone else ranked below them, with better wins under their belt as well.  Had a tough weekend on their home turf as they suffered two losses in their tournament, losing to Mt. San Antonio (63-65) and then Santa Rosa (68-76).  Jumps right back into action heading to Southern California this week to face Mira Costa in the El Camino Tournament of Champions on November 19th.

#7 Chabot (2-1)  (-4)
Falls 4 spots after a mediocre weekend.  Defeated Siskiyous (84-74) and Lassen (94-79) while falling to Feather River (87-97).  Heads to West Valley for their next game on November 21st.

#8 Los Medanos (4-0)    (nr)
Jumps out of not ranked into the 8th spot this week after winning the Solano Tournament with three straight wins over Gavilan (85-61), American River (88-72) and Redwoods (105-100 in 2OT).  Gets to rematch Redwoods on November 19th in the first round of the Mendocino Tournament.

#9 Merritt (2-1)    (-)
Stays at the ninth spot in my rankings after having the week off.  Is back in action this week against American River in the first round of the Shasta Tournament on November 20th

#10 Redwoods (3-1)   (nr)
Jumps up from the non ranked category into the top 10 after finishing 2nd in the Solano Tournament.  Had wins over Sacramento City (96-94) and Skyline (100-98) before falling in double overtime to Los Medanos in the Championship game.  With all their games being so close they are a few points away from having a losing record, but there is something to be said for a team that can win close games.

#11 Ohlone (2-0)
Defeated a solid Hartnell team (92-74) in their only game last week.  Will face Shasta in the first round of the Shasta Tournament on November 20th.

#12 Contra Costa (2-1)   (-)
Had the week off but is riding on their solid showing in the Las Positas Tournament.  Won’t play again until December 3rd when they face Santa Monica in the first round of the Diablo Valley Tournament.

#13 Cosumnes River (1-1)    (-1)
Drops one spot due to the emergence of several teams into the rankings.  Had a tough road trip up to Feather River and Lassen last week.  Lost to FRC (89-98) and came out victorious against Lassen (92-88). Faces Skyline on November 19th in the first round of the Mendocino Tournament.

#14 Sacramento City (4-2)    (-1)
Drops one spot, mostly due to several other teams jumping into the rankings last week.  Came away with third place in the Solano Tournament with wins over Solano (92-90) and American River (70-67).  It’s only loss was a close one to Redwoods (94-96).   Sac City takes a couple weeks off before heading up to the Cosumnes River Tournament on December 3rd where they will face Feather River in the first round.

#15 Shasta (4-1)
Coming away with the consolation in the Solano Tournament is enough to keep Shasta in the Top 15.  They had wins over the weekend against Gavilan (95-66) and Solano (73-63) after losing to American River (69-79).  Shasta will face Ohlone in the first round of their own tournament on November 20th

Others:
Hartnell (3-1)  Has started off fast this year.  Could creep up in the rankings.
De Anza (2-2)  Could easily be in the Top 15 right now.  Their two losses are by a total of 4 points against ranked teams, including my #2 Feather River.
Foothill (2-2)  Came away with a great win against Monterey to even the score.  Could easily be in the Top 15.
Monterey (2-2)  Another team that could easily be in the Top 15 at this point.
Marin (3-3)  Is starting to gain momentum.
Columbia (2-2)  The loss at home to West Valley is hurting them at this point.  Plenty of time to rebound.
Sequoias (3-3)  Solid schedule, plenty of time to earn their spot in the rankings.

Coach K's Northern California Men's Juco Week 1 Rankings (1-15)

The first week of the 2015-16 season was very eventful and full of great match-ups.  Below is Coach K's Northern California Men's Basketball rankings for Week 1.
This ranking is solely for entertainment and educational purposes only, and is in no way affiliated with the CCCAA or any other association.  It is purely my opinion based on my discussions from around the basketball community and my own personal observations and gut feeling.  I appreciate you taking the time to read our blog.

#1 City College of San Francisco (3-0)
Stays at my #1 ranking after an impressive showing at the CCSF Tip-Off tournament where they posted wins over Yuba (94-81), Mt. San Antonio (72-68) & Fresno City (94-81).  The win over Fresno City seemed the most impressive as CCSF dominated the visiting Rams from start to finish.  Jalen Canty proved he will be a handful as he dominated the paint all weekend long, putting most opposing defenders in foul trouble and swatting shots away on the other end.  He earned tournament MVP and looks to be one of the most dominant forces inside that I've seen in a long time at this level.  The rest of the CCSF squad showed they can really play together and also shoot the lights out, as many players, including 6'9 Jashandeep Kahlon, knocked down jumpers from beyond the arc.  CCSF's full-court press also looks to bother most teams, as they have a deep bench and get after it on the defensive end.  The press seemed to bother both Mt. San Antonio and Fresno City, which is very impressive since these teams usually are the one's pestering teams full-court.
CCSF will be back in action in Fresno for the Fresno City Tournament.  They will face West Hills-Coalinga in the first round on November 13th.

#2 Fresno City College (2-1)
Stays at my #2 spot after defeating Napa Valley (111-64) and Santa Rosa (79-74) in the CCSF tournament before falling in the championship.  Despite losing in the championship, they lost to my #1 ranked team, which is only going to force me to place them just behind CCSF for now.  Fresno did not suit up all their players in the championship, so if they face CCSF again in their own tournament this weekend, the results could be very different.  The Rams are very talented this year and should stay at the top of my rankings all year long.  They open up against Sierra this weekend in the Fresno City tournament on November 13th.

#3 Chabot College (0-0)
Has yet to play this year, but is still holding the #3 spot for now.  Has plenty of talent to stay at the top, but only time will tell.  They host the Chabot Tip-Off round robin this weekend where they will face Siskiyous on November 12th at 8pm, Feather River on November 13th at 3pm, and Lassen on November 14th at 3pm.  This will give us better insight on where to place to Gladiators, especially how they perform against a tough Feather River College squad.

#4 Butte College (3-0)
Took the Championship of the Las Positas tournament where they won against three worthy opponents.  Starting off slow against Diablo Valley, Butte took them into overtime and came out victorious 71-66.  They also defeated a solid Columbia team 77-68 and Sacramento City 79-68 in the next two rounds.  Butte has a great group this year, and has plenty of size to compete with anyone.  They are off for a couple weeks, but will face Simpson JV on November 23rd at 7pm before having a rematch with Columbia on November 28th.

#5 Feather River College (3-0)
Feather River has come out of the gates fast this year, taking down Reedley (101-65) and Sierra College (92-83) at the Sierra Tournament.  Monday they also defeated Cosumnes River at home 98-89 which will raise everyone's eyebrows even more. FRC was not in my pre season top 15, but have jumped all the way up to #5. As usual, Feather River looks to have a couple of the State's leading scorers again, as Derrick Randolph is putting up 32.5 points per game plus Anthony Smith netting 29.5 so far.  They will head down the the Bay Area for the Chabot Tip-Off round robin where they will face three more solid teams.  They will face Marin on November 12th at 4pm, Chabot on November 13th at 3pm, and De Anza on November 13th at 1pm.  If you can get to Hayward early on Friday, I would recommend getting their for the Chabot match-up as this should be a great afternoon game.

#6 Santa Rosa Junior College (2-1)
SRJC jumps out of non-ranked status into my #6 spot. Looked really good at the CCSF tournament, taking down two very good teams in Alameda (86-53) and Mt. San Antonio (75-63).  They took Fresno City down to the wire in the second round before falling 79-74.  They have a good mix of speed, length, shooting and size to compete with anyone this year.  If their shots are falling it will be a rough night for any opponent.  They will head down to the Fresno City Tournament this weekend as well, starting off against Merced on November 13th.

#7 Cabrillo (2-0)
The Seahawks jump up two spots in my rankings as they took away two wins in their own tournament.  They defeated Modesto (75-66) and San Joaquin Delta (84-71) to prove that Cabrillo is going to be a force again this year.  Cabrillo will have another home game this week, as they host Las Positas on November 13th at 7pm.

#8 Monterey Peninsula College (2-1)
Drops a couple spots, mostly because of the emergence of Santa Rosa and Feather River in my rankings.  They had two solid wins at San Jose City last weekend, coming away victorious over Foothill (72-62) and Lassen (83-63).  They lost to Riverside City College (77-83) who went back to southern California undefeated.  MPC will face Foothill again on November 12th at 5pm.

#9 Merritt College (2-1)
Moves up one spot in my rankings after an impressive showing at the SJCC Tip-Off.  They took home wins against San Jose City (81-74) and Foothill (74-68) before losing to Riverside (65-69).  Merritt has a completely new squad, but they look very balanced this year.  They are off this week, but will be back in action against American River in the first round of the Shasta Tournament on November 20th at 4pm.

#10 Columbia (2-1)
Moves up five spots in my rankings after taking home third place in the Las Positas Tournament.  They won a thriller against Contra Costa on a buzzer beater (74-73) to get into the winning bracket.  In the second round they fell to eventual champion Butte College (68-77). In the third place game they defeated tournament host Las Positas (73-64).  The Claim Jumpers will be back in action November 14th against West Valley at 6pm.

#11 Contra Costa (2-1)
The Comets are another team that has jumped into my Top 15.  They recovered from a heartbreaking loss to Columbia by defeating a solid DVC squad the next night (70-66) to stay alive in the consolation bracket of the Las Positas Tournament.  They then pummeled Mendocino (109-74) in the consolation bracket final to prove they are one of the top teams in Northern California this year.  The Comets will take the rest of the month off before jumping back into action on December 3rd against Santa Monica in the Diablo Valley Tournament at 2pm.

#12 Cosumnes River (0-1)
The Hawks drop four spots in my rankings after falling to Feather River in their sole game of the season so far.  However, since Feather River is in my top 5, I am not going to punish CRC too much, since they have not had a chance to face any other teams this year.  They continue their road trip up north as they will face Lassen on November 11th at 2pm.

#13 Sacramento City (2-1)
Another pleasant surprise to Juco fans on opening weekend, Sac City opened up with wins over Siskiyous (84-81) and Las Positas (76-74) before falling to Butte in the Championship game (68-79).  Sac City is back in action this weekend in the Solano Tournament where they will open up against Solano on Friday at 7pm.

#14 Shasta (2-0)
Another team that has jumped into the Top 15 out of nowhere is the Knights from Shasta College.  They came away with two wins at the Cabrillo round robin over the weekend, defeating Delta (93-85) and Modesto (86-76).  Is this a foreshadowing of the Golden Valley Conference emerging as a top conference this year?  We will get to see how Shasta will continue as they open up in the Solano Tournament against American River on Friday at 3pm.

15-TIE
#15 Skyline (1-0)
They have only one game under their belt, but proved they can put the ball in the hoop this year, as they defeated Alameda (115-96).  We will get to see more of Skyline as they also will be in the Solano Tournament this weekend.  They open up against Redwoods at 5pm on Friday.

#15 Marin (1-2)
Not sure what happened in the consolation game against Alameda, but I did get to see Marin in the first two rounds of the CCSF tournament.  I feel the dominant game against Yuba was most impressive, as Marin only suited up 7 players and had about a week of actual practice before the tournament.  With some more practice time, and possibly a few more bodies on the bench, they could be very very good this year.

Falling off:

Yuba (0-2)
Hyped as one of Northern California's best teams this year, but didn't really compete against either CCSF or Marin.  I believe they have the most talent, hands down, in Northern California, so I can't help but feel disappointed as a basketball fan.  Is good enough to beat the mediocre teams on talent alone, but that won't be enough to get back into the playoffs.

DVC (0-2)
Started strong against Butte before falling in overtime.  Was a setup for a frustrating weekend as they had to face a solid Contra Costa team in the consolation bracket.  Has a week off before facing Cabrillo in the Shasta Tournament.

San Jose City College (1-2)
Has some talent, but seems to be missing the firepower that Speed City needs to play their type of game.  Losing 2 of 3 in your own gym is not how anyone wants to begin the season.

Modesto Junior College (0-2)
Lost two games, to two teams that are currently undefeated.  So trying not to look too much into their record, but they still need to pick up some wins.  I thought they would be the sleeper this year, but only time will tell.

Cañada College (0-2)
Two games and out at the Cuesta Tournament.  It seems they won't be the same without Crisshawn Clark suiting up this year for the Colts.

Las Positas (2-2)
Took fourth in their own tournament.  Not a bad start, just not good enough to stay in my Top 15, for now.

Coach K's Northern California Men's Juco Preseason Rankings (1-15)

Since the 2015-16 season officially begins a week from today, on November 2nd, I feel this is the best time to come out with my preseason rankings.  This year should be one of the most exciting and competitive seasons in a long time, with almost every program stepping up in the talent department.  This preseason ranking is solely for entertainment and educational purposes only, and is in no way affiliated with the CCCAA or any other association.  It is purely my opinion based on my discussions from around the basketball community and my own personal observations and gut feeling.  I appreciate you taking the time to read our blog.  The ranking will be followed by last year's season record.

#1)  City College of San Francisco   (21-9)
CCSF has once again loaded up with an impressive roster of high level talent. Sporting News has them ranked #13 in the nation, ahead of any other west coast programs, which helps me feel confident in putting them as my #1 preseason program in NorCal.
It's hard to say that 2014-15 was a down year for CCSF, having won the most competitive conference in the state, the Coast-North Conference which included 6 playoff teams.  But we could all tell, from a talent standpoint, that CCSF was not quite what we have grown to expect from previous seasons.  That being said, the Rams had a great year earning the conference crown on it's way to a third round exit in the state playoffs.   Coach Labagh and staff seems to have gathered the recruiting class they expected in 2014, but only a year later as sophomore transfers for his 2015 squad.  The group is highly touted starting with 6'8 245 Jalen Canty, who earned Fifth Team honors in the Sporting News Preseason Super Sophs list. Canty transfers back to the Bay Area after a semester at Casper CC where he averaged 10.5 pts & 6 rebs.  Also joining the Rams as transfers are 6'8 Tulsa transfer and now Oregon State committee Keondre Dew, 6'6 Shon Briggs (Casper CC; 10.1 pts & 5.7 rebs), Keanu Peters (Casper CC; 4.8 pts & 3.9 asst) and speedy PG Trevor Dunbar (Washington State).    Other sophomores, returning from last years CCSF team are 6'5 Jarrod Nodar (9.4 pts, 43% 3pt & 3.5 rebs), 6'4 Troy Thompson (9.8 pts & 4.2 rebs), 6'9 Jashandeep Kahlon (6.4 pts & 5.2 rebs) and 6'6 Ladonovan Wilder (2.2 pts & 2 rebs).  Having so many talented and experienced sophomores should keep CCSF at the top for most the season.  However, Coach Labagh did not forget about bringing in some freshman talent by adding 6'7 Kendall Mcintosh (Freedom HS), 6'1 Justin Brown (St Joseph Notre Dame HS), 6'2 Zach Copeland (Berkeley High), 6'3 David Parsons (Sacred Heart), 6'1 Jason Smith (Marshall High)  and 6'3 Armani Hall (Washington HS).
This year's team seems to have a great balance of quickness, shooting, size, length and athleticism that should make it a tough match-up for most teams.  They will not waste anytime this year as they open up against one of NorCals other top programs, Yuba, on November 6th at 6pm in the CCSF Tournament.

#2 Fresno City College   (28-4)
Making 2015-16 look like 'the-year-of-the-ram' FCC earns my #2 preseason spot.  Sporting News puts them at #15 in their preseason national poll, putting them as the 2nd and only other California school that made their list.  I'm not going to argue with such an established writing staff, nor the tradition that FCC has earned.  The Rams constantly find themselves atop the state rankings, and usually it is without having any elite talent on their roster.  But this year Coach Madec has one of his most talented teams since moving to Fresno.  This talent is headlined by the emerging super sophomore Josh Sykes.  The 6'8 versatile forward has opened up everyone's eyes this summer, earning a spot on the Sporting News 2nd Team Preseason Super Sophs list.  Joining Sykes from last year's team is the athletic 6'4 B.J. Shleton (8.7 pts & 3.2 rebs), 6'1 Nick Hilton (7.6 pts & 2 rebs), 6'4 Jaffrey Stillman (4 pts & 2.8 rebs) and 6'1 Evan Silahn (3.9 pts).  6'7 DeAngelo Ashley comes back after redshirting last year.  He averaged 3 pts & 3 rebs two years ago for the Rams.  Another redshirt joins the team, 6'5 Terrence Weinecke should add to the Rams depth.  Transferring in from North Idaho College is 5'9 Will Dorsey from Rainier Beach HS in Seattle.  The point guard averaged 11pts & 3 assists during his freshman campaign at the Idaho school.
Fresno has always been what appears as an overachieving program, based on what you see 'on paper'.  But with the elite level athleticism and talent they seem to possess this year, it looks like they could be scary if everything falls into place.  The only weakness FCC seems to have each year is playing in the CVC conference.  As most teams are improving as they play a competitive conference schedule, the Rams seem to coast through conference play that has only a couple teams that pose a challenge.  But this year the CVC seems vastly improved, so the stars may be moving into alignment for FCC.
Making November 6th a very intriguing day for juco basketball, Fresno opens the season vs. Napa at the CCSF tournament at 4pm.

#3 Chabot College   (17-13)
The Gladiators have completely reloaded adding a completely new team for the 2015-16 season.  Having a sophomore-heavy roster last year and apparently not satisfied with a 2nd place finish in the Coast-North Conference & early playoff exit, Coach Aye and staff have started with a clean slate.  The expectations seem to be high, as the Gladiators still have a taste in their mouth from the Final Four appearence in 2014.  From what I'm hearing in the bball community, and have seen in the preseason scrimmages, it seems that this strategy is paying off.  Heavy with sophomore transfers, Chabot also brings in a couple of standout freshman as well.  Speedy PG Larry Jones (James Logan HS) & 6'6 Dalvin Guy (McClymonds) join forces, and 6'5 Wykeem Randle (Willowridge HS) could develop into one of the top freshman in the state this year. Dynamic 6'2 guard DeAndre Davis (West Los Angeles CC; 25.6 pts & 5.8 assists),  6'6 Keith Phillips (Macomb CC; 17.1 pts & 8.8 rebs), 6'7 Drelan Tripplett (Allen County CC; 6pts & 4.7 rebs), 6'7 Robert Blunt (Glendale CC; 2.4 pts & 4.6 rebs), 6'3 Deshun Garrett (Redlands CC), 6'6 Shamil Sharma (Diablo Valley CC), 7'0 Seth Cox (Wabash Valley CC) & 6'5 Marcus Booker (Alameda CC) lead the list of transfers to Chabot.  Other freshman include Courtney Anderson (Westwood HS), Hayden Ordone (West High) and Melvin Ware (Hayward HS).
With so many transfers one will wonder how this team will mesh together this year.  But the talent is there, along with quickness, size and shooting.  The Coast-North conference will provide enough competition to test Chabot up into the playoffs making them another team that will be scary as the season progresses.
Chabot will host Siskiyous College to tip-off the season on November 12th at 8pm.
For an early look at the Chabot Gladiators, check out this highlight video courtesy of NorCal SportsTV from the preseason showcase.

#4 Yuba College   (15-10)
Yuba comes back for 2015-16 with a very impressive roster.  As impressive as that roster is, they return three big-time talents from last year in which they did not make the playoffs.  But the talent is definitely there, and if they can figure out how to play together and win games, this could be a very dangerous group.  The group is headed by Iowa State commit Manny Malou (14.7 pts & 8.5 rebs).  The 6'9 versatile forward earned a spot on the Sporting News Preseason 1st Team Super Soph list and is regarded as a future NBA prospect. Leading scorer and Utah commit Jo Jo Zamora (18.3 pts & 4 assts) returns along with the talented 6'7 Vasije Saraba (16.4 pts & 5.8 rebs).  This is quite a bit of fire power returning for Yuba, and should help them start the season much better than they did last year.  Adding to the impressive returning group is a solid list of newcomers and transfers.  6'7 James Hadnot (Ranger CC; 5.7 pts & 2.7 rebs), 6'5 Kevin Daniels (Sierra JC; 3.8 pts), 6'10 Eric Schieve (Marysville HS), 6'4 Maurice Trotter (Fairfield HS), 6'8 Jihad Woods (Vanden HS), 6'0 Xavier Sims (Eastmoor), 6'6 Jalen Davis (River City HS), Isaac Thornton 6'6 (Oakmont HS), 6'1 Cariun Williams (Patterson HS), 6'6 Finn Whetstone (Christian Brothers HS), 6'11 Sukhman Sandu (Canada).
With the best players on the team being returning sophomores the 49ers should have a better start to their season this year, which is vital for them getting back into the playoffs.  They definitely have the talent and size to compete with anyone, and begin the season against CCSF on November 6th at 6pm at the CCSF tournament.  This will be a chance to prove themselves as more than just an impressive roster, as this tournament features 4 of my top 5 teams.  Coming away with at least 2 wins on opening weekend will definitely show that they are a force this season.

 #5 College of Marin   (26-4)
Marin made serious noise last year by winning the Bay Valley conference and advancing to the elite 8 in the state playoffs.  This year they have a great group of returnees and a great recruiting class.  The question mark is, now that Coach Granucci has resigned, will the team stay intact or fall apart?  I would have placed them higher on the list had the coaching situation not been an issue, but since the talent is there on the court, and Marshall Collins is moving in as head coach (6 days before the start of the season) I am going to keep them at #5 for now.
Returning from last year are 6'2 Luke Chavez (11.4 pts), George Johnson (9.5 pts), Willie Rooks (9.1 pts) & 6'8 Bobby Reeves (4.4 pts & 3 rebs).    The incoming class is listed as 6'1 Tyrian Davis (Reno, NV), 6'3 Noah Everly (San Marin, CA), 6'5 Kenneth Modica, 6'5 Robert Colton (Riordan HS), 6'7 Brandon Barrett (Benicia HS), 6'7 Jarred Treandus (Antioch HS), and 6'8 Kareem Ndiaye (Riordan HS).
We will get to see just who sticks around and how they adjust after a coaching change, as they open up in the tough CCSF tournament on November 6th, against Mt San Antonio at 8pm.
For an early look at the College of Marin team, check out this video for an in-depth coverage of the fall preseason showcase with plenty of highlights and introductions.

#6 Monterey Peninsula College   (13-12)
MPC is looking to be the top team in the Coast-South Conference this year and compete with the best in NorCal as well.  Having a disappointing season last year, MPC brings back a solid group of returnees and newcomers. California JC ball is typically a guard dominated game, and MPC brings back one of the state's most formidable duos in Isaac Clark & Deondre Otis.  Both Isaac Clark (14.9 pts, 39% 3pt, & 3.8 rebs) and Deondre Otis (7.8 pts & 3.6 assts) look vastly improved which could be scary for opposing defenses. The returning group also features 6'5 Jaskarn Bajwa (3.2 pts), 6'5 Isiah Brown (3.9 pts) & 6'2 Kyle Hieb giving MPC enough experience to start the season strong.  The solid list of newcomers includes: 6'7 Ryan Donnelly (CSU Stanislaus), 6'6 D.J. Johnson (Olympic HS), 6'5 Adriann Knox (Salinas HS).
MPC opens the season against Foothill on November 5th at 4pm in the San Jose City College Tournament.

#7 Modesto Junior College   (6-20)
Potentially having one of the biggest turnarounds from last season is MJC.  As mentioned before, California JC ball is a game that it's necessary to have really good guards in order to succeed.  Coach Brogan and staff have a couple of the best guard combos this year in Zach Gonzales (13.9 pts & 4.2 rebs) & incoming freshman Mason Washington (Modesto Christian HS).  These two guards will be difficult to handle for the opposition as both are talented and have great size for their position.  Adding more depth to the backcourt is CSU Stanislaus transfer Brennan Pope.  Other newcomers include 6'7 Michael Hatfield (Manteca HS), 6'4 Kevin Howland-Wolaridge (Bullard HS), 6'5 Brandon Moss (Bear Creek HS), 6'1 Ravon Alexander (Lincoln HS), Donovan Galloway (Beyer HS), 6'1 Elijah Tuando (West HS), & 6'4 Blake Houser (Downey HS). Returning from last season is 6'2 Chris Salazar & 6'7 Joe Hamilton (6.8 pts & 3. rebs).
Modesto opens the season on November 7th at Cabrillo with tip-off scheduled at 7pm.

#8 Cosumnes River College   (23-8)
Coach James Giacomazzi has moved on the Las Positas, and Coach Devin Aye, formerly of Lassen, is now at the helm in Elk Grove.  But what do you do when you get a job only a couple months before season starts, with only one returner still around from the previous season?  You rebuild and reload, very quickly.  This year's Hawks will be young, with only two sophomores listed on their roster, but they have the talent to remain one of the top programs in the North.  The sole returner from last year's Big 8 champion team is 6'4 Will White (3.1 pts).  The list of newcomers include: Michael Murphy (Valley HS), 6'1 Kenny Doss (Lincoln College; 8.5 pts & 3.8 rebs), Johann Tate Jr. (Pleasant Grove HS), Leondre Lintz (Monterey Trail HS), Diante Noel (Acadiana HS), Victor Wariso (Monterey Trail HS), Michael Briscoe (River City HS), 6'1 Trevor Hooper (Washington Union HS), Gor Mikayelyan (Cordova HS), 6'7 Isaiah Simon (Florin HS), 6'4 Phil Morgan (Natomas HS), 6'5 Gerard Andrus (North Side HS), 6'9 Bakari Bradford (Laguna Creek HS) & 6'10 Lejae Thompson (Valley HS).
This year's squad will be young, but looks to have a lot of talent and deep bench.  CRC opens up on the road vs. Feather River College on November 9th at 7pm.
For an early look at the 2015-16 CRC Hawks here is some highlights courtesy of NorCal SportsTV from the preseason showcase.

#9 Cabrillo College   (15-12)
Cabrillo needed to do some serious reloading after a solid sophomore class has moved on.  But Coach Marcopulos and staff are always known to bring in solid talent each year, and this year they haven't disappointed the loyal fans of Aptos. The sole returner from last year's third place conference finisher is 6'5 Noah Wheeler.  The list of incoming talent includes 6'5 Logan Rooney (Arcata HS), 6'0 Solomon Taylor (Wekiva HS), 6'0 Randy Motilalsingh (Lyman HS), 6'0 Giani Hollie (Findley University), 6'7 Brett Reed (The Woodlands College Park HS), 6'4 Malcolm Stevenson (Wekiva HS), Lucan Lenior (France), Kyle Snowden (Soquel HS), 6'4 Demetrius Rose (Detroit Community HS), 6'6 Joe Maleta (Saint Francis HS), 6'8 Shelton Black (Compton HS), 6'5 Alex Shearer (Soquel HS), 6'8 Stephan Ammentorp (Union HS), & 6'2 Tristan Hodges (Soquel HS).
Cabrillo opens the season on November 7th against Modesto at 7pm in Aptos.

#10 Merritt College   (25-7)
Coach Miller and staff are coming off a great season after earning another Final Four appearance.  The only downside is that the T-birds have zero returners from last years team.  So the 2015 roster is composed of 14 freshman that will need to grow quickly in order for Merritt to continue their success.  But this recruiting class looks very solid with 6'2 Tyrell Alcorn (El Cerrito HS), 6'6 Lewis Hayes (Chavez HS), 6'5 Lamont Banks (St. Joseph HS), 6'9 Zach Christian (Lynwood HS), 6'0 Omari Brown (Sacred Heart Cathedral), Karim Helalili (Tunisia), 6'10 Matthew Thomas (Newark Memorial), 6'3 Kenyon Williams (Brookside Christian HS), 6'3 Ian Luellan (Inderkum HS), 6'5 Malik Thompson (Deer Valley HS), 6'4 AJ Benson (Pacific Hills HS), 6'3 Oliver Davis (Valley Christian HS), & 6'5 Andrew Pierson (Berkeley HS).
Merritt has some pieces this year, but only time will tell if their youth will be able to adjust quickly to the college game.  I think by the time conference begins that Merritt will be one of the top teams in the Bay Valley Conference.  We will get to witness the early look at this year's T-birds as Merritt opens up the season on November 5th vs. San Jose City College in the San Jose City Tipoff tournament.

#11 Butte College   (18-9)
The oftentimes overlooked and underrated Butte College Roadrunners could very well be one of the top 5 or 6 teams in my rankings, but it's just too difficult to tell right  now without getting a chance to see them play yet.  They have won the GVC conference two years in a row and look to make that streak grow to three with another great group of players.  Returning is 6'7 Michael Shoemaker (11.9 pts & 6.5 rebs) and 6'7 Cameron Moore (2.7 pts & 2 rebs).  Adding to the their sophomore experience are two transfers, 6'10 Vladimir Lazarevic (Seminole State CC) and 6'5 Travis Stevens (Palomar JC, 2.3 pts).  The incoming freshman include 6'7 Brandon Sheppard (Jackson, CA), David Richardson (Warren, OH), 6'3 Tre'Quan Burnett (Gary, IA), 6'5 Josiah Wood (Reno, NV), 6'4 Jared Stidham (Chico, CA), 6'1 Terry Clarendon (Rialto, CA), 6'0 Danny Lewis (Marysville, CA), and 6'0 Trey Foster (Charlotte, NC).
Butte has has a history of success, and it looks like this year they could have one of their most successful seasons.  They open up the season in the Las Positas Tournament on November 5th against Diablo Valley at 1pm.

#12 Cañada College   (24-7)
Cañada Coach Mike Reynoso is coming off a season to remember after losing in overtime to eventual state Champion Saddleback in the State Final Four.  The Colts took the state by surprise last year and almost took the state title in the process.  But 2014-15 will not be a one-hit-wonder for the Redwood City school, the Colts have brought in another great recruiting class to replace a bevy of talent that has moved on.  I am doing this ranking, assuming that Crisshawn Clark is not suiting up this year to join forces with his teammates, otherwise I would have ranked Cañada much higher.  But focusing on the players who have decided to play in 2015-16, the Colts still have a very impressive group, most notably USF transfer Frankie Ferrari.  6'0 Jacqui Biggins comes back to the Bay Area after a year at CSU Dominguez Hills and should be another great addition to the backcourt.  Other sophomores returning from last year's Final Four team include 6'4 Brian Garrett (6.1 pts & 1.7 rebs) and 6'5 Rodrigo Puliceno (6.9 pts & 5.7 rebs).  Coach Reynoso has brought in a solid group of freshman with 6'7 Chris Bene (Sequoia HS), 6'8 Case Durfrane (Half Moon Bay HS), 6'2 Paul Smoot (San Mateo, CA), and 6'5 Andre Robinson (San Mateo, CA).
We will get to witness the Colts for the first time this season on November 6th in the Cuesta tournament as they face Fullerton College at 6pm.

#13 Diablo Valley College   (17-13)
DVC should have a solid season, and bring back an impressive core from last year's playoff team.  Coach Coggimiglio always makes it difficult for opposing teams and defenses, and with six sophomores he should have a group that can work his system.  Returnees from last year are 6'7 Jaques Carraway (6.2 pts & 3.4 rebs), 6'4 Spencer Clark (5.9 pts & 5.5 rebs), 6'7 Damien Banford (5.8 pts & 4.3 rebs) and 6'0 Jerrell Handley.  Adding to the experience are transfers 6'4 Reggie Arthur-Mixon (American River College; 7.4 pts & 2.2 rebs) and 6'2 Troy Owens (American River College; 2.0 pts).  Incoming freshman to Concord are 6'2 Leon Williams (Solano CC), 6'4 Steven Daily (College Park HS), 6'6 Kevin Crosno (College Park HS), and 6'2 Remy Dillard (Bishop Manouge).
The Vikings open up the season against Butte in the Las Positas Tournament, on November 5th at 1pm.

#14 San Jose City College   (26-4)
The returning Coast-South Conference champs will need to have reloaded, after only returning two players from last year's 3rd round playoff team.  Coach Carr is known to bring in a great group of talent each year, but as of right now, just how good the Jaguars will be this year is still unknown.  Returning are 6'7 Lucious Brown (5.5 pts & 2.6 rebs) and 6'10 Akil Douglas (3.1 pts & 2.5 rebs).  Both newcomers should take on a much bigger role this year after sharing minutes with so many players last year.  Other newcomers include DeVante Baisa (Alaska Anchorage Univ), 6'2 Brian King (Roosevelt HS), 6'10 Jonah Underwood (San Jose, CA), 6'1 Kameron Vales (Brookside Christian HS), and 6'3 Sean Moore (Simeon HS).
Speed City gets to showcase their mostly new roster in their tip-off tournament on November 5th against Merritt.

#15 - TIE

Las Positas College   (16-13)
What do you get when you combine a playoff team with many returnees, and a new coach with a winning tradition?  You have a team that could make some noise this year.  Coach James Giacommazi take over for the Hawks in Livermore after winning the Big 8 conference last year.  What he also has is six returnees from last years team that started to shine at the end of the season.  Coming back are leading scorer 6'4 Mckayle Harnell (13.2 pts & 4.5 rebs), 6'0 Cameron Moses (10.0 pts & 3.9 assts), 6'2 Giordi V'soske (4.5 pts), 6'3 Darius Limbrick (3.3 pts), 6'4 Brandon Eboigbodin (8.7 pts & 8.6 rebs) and 6'2 Nick Merrill (5.7 pts & 2.9 rebs).  Adding to this experience are a freshman class consisting of 6'2 Kameron Johnson (Granada HS), 6'2 Aaron Berry (Heritage HS), Ellis Salahuddin (Westchester HS), 6'3 Keith Hunter (Oakland HS), 6'0 Nilo Yuson (Lathrop HS), 6'0 Etienne Ettlinger (Switzerland), 6'4 Spencer Wood (Cal HS), 6'7 Shaun Rodgers (Deer Valley HS), and 6'4 Teran Massengill (Pioneer HS).
Las Positas opens the season up hosting their own tournament, and will face Mendocino on November 5th at 5pm.

Columbia College   (16-11)
Under Coach Rob Hoyt the Claim Jumpers have become relevant again.  The city of Sonora has a lot to celebrate as Columbia is coming off a solid season and has brought in some impressive talent for 2015-16.  Returning from last year is 6'1 Michael Meserole (10.3 pts & 2.5 rebs).  6'7 Deandre Stallings has come in from Liberty Ranch where he was league MVP and should bring some much needed firepower to a young roster.  Also new to the Claim Jumpers are Trevin Wilson (East Texas Baptist Univ), Jake Pollock (Beyer HS), 6'2 Aaron May (Albany, GA), 6'2 Bosten Van Der Veur (Farmington, UT), 6'6 Kashmiere Hughes (Peoria, IL) and 6'0 Lewayne Grant (Deerfield Beach HS).
Columbia opens the season at the Las Positas Tournament, and will face Contra Costa on November 5th at 3pm.
For an early look at this year's Columbia College squad, here is some highlights from NorCal Sports TV from the preseason showcase games.

OTHERS: (in no particular order)
The following teams are also capable of making noise this year.  I look forward to seeing more of everyone this year to get a more accurate idea of the top teams for 2015-16.

Sierra College - looked good in the showcase, has a solid team, just need to see how they start the season

Foothill College - coming off a great playoff run, earning a trip to the elite 8 after knocking off the #1 team in the state.  Always respectable and I look forward to see what they have for this year.

Ohlone College -  lots of new faces, but also have some impressive talent on their roster.  Will see if they start the season as fast as they did in 2014.

Skyline College -  spent time at the top of the rankings last year, before the beginning of a brutal Coast-North Conference schedule.  Should be in the running for another playoff spot this year.

Contra Costa College - has an impressive roster, look forward to see how they perform this year.

Feather River College- lost their leading scorer, but has reloaded.  Are an intriguing team for 2015-16 and could surprise.

Porterville - based on their roster it appears they may be getting after it again.  Look forward to seeing how they start the season.  Could be another surprise for this year.

College of Sequoias - Another team that could easily have earned a spot in my Top 15, only if I knew more about them.  But I am sure they will be another team to challenge Fresno City in the CVC and earn another trip to the postseason.

American River College - another sleeper that I think a lot of people are looking over for 2015-16.  Had a great turnaround last year.  They are big and will dominate most teams inside.

College of the Redwoods - Always formidable, I just don't know much about them at this point.  Should compete for the GVC title this year.
