Capping one of Santa Rosa Junior College’s best men’s basketball seasons, the Bear Cubs had five all-conference players led by all-state selection Bobby Sharp.
Sharp was Big 8 Conference Player of the Year after leading Santa Rosa to a second straight league title. The Bear Cubs’ top scorer at 17 points per game, Sharp, a guard, also was named first team for the California Community College Athletic Association.
An All-Empire player at Cardinal Newman, the sophomore Sharp will play next season at the University of Portland. The Pilots compete in the West Coast Conference, an NCAA Division I league.
Santa Rosa players earning first team conference honors were point guard Max Fujii and forward Conner Gillett.
Fujii, a former All-Empire Player of the Year at Analy, was second on the Bear Cubs in scoring. Fujii averaged twice as many assists as turnovers on the season. Gillett, from La Mirada, led the team in rebounding.
Second team honors went to guards Xavier McCall and Jajuan Hammond. McCall, an All-Empire standout at Cardinal Newman, was third on the Bear Cubs in scoring. Hammond, out of Fresno, also averaged double digits in points.
Santa Rosa coach Craig McMillan was Big 8 Conference coach of the year.
Going 27-6, the Bear Cubs were a high scoring squad. Santa Rosa reached the state final eight for the third consecutive campaign.
