The Fresno Bee’s Co-Player of the Year with teammate Chris Russell.  Silverstrom averaged a team-high 16 points and 5 rebounds for a team that finished ranked No. 12 in the state.

Smith was a first team All-Metro selection by the San Francisco Chronicle and was first team All-East Bay by the Contra Costa Times.  Will play for UNLV next year.

Thames, a first team All-Metro choice by the Sacramento Bee.  A three-year starter, Thames averaged 17.5 ppg & 5.6 apg.

San Leandro's Sean MacKay resigns to pursue Assistant Coaching duties at San Jose City

Coach Sean MacKay of San Leandro High School has decided to leave San Leandro for the college coaching ranks at San Jose City College.  Coach MacKay led the Pirates to a 24-7 record and a #1 ranking in the Division 1 North-Coast section playoffs.

Aaron Armstead (San Jose City) signs with Northern Illinois NCAA Division I

Aaron Armstead of San Jose City College has signed with Northern Illinois.  Armstead played one season at Wisconsin-Green Bay in 2011-12, appearing in 30 games, making four starts while averaging 3.3 points and 1.6 rebounds per game.  He played his sophomore year at San Jose City College where he averaged 14.4 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.2 assists.

Northern Illinois competes in the Mid-American Conference with Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami, Ohio, Toleda and Western Michigan.

Anders Haas, of Bishop O'Dowd ('11) commits to University of Albany NCAA DI

Anders Haas goal of playing Division I basketball in the United States has come true.  Haas came from Denmark to Oakland, California to play his high school ball at Bishop O'Dowd, where he graduated in 2011.  Not heavily recruited out of high school Haas decided to take matters into his own hands to prove he can play at the next level.  He played his freshman year for State College of Florida Junior College this past season.  Stats are not listed, but Haas was recognized as Player of the Week in this article from floridajucohoops.com.  "Haas led the Manatees to a 3-0 week which included wins over St. Thomas JV, Indian River State and ASA (New York). Haas averaged 17.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 10.7 assists and 2.0 steals during the voting period. He shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from the three-point line and was a perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line on the week."

According to his facebook page, Haas has committed to the University of Albany, who lost to Duke in the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament this year.

"Officially committed to university at Albany. Can't wait for the next 3 years of my life. Thanks to the small amount of people who thought I could do this.. I have come a long way since my high school coach told me to go D3 lol. Lets go Great Danes!!!"

We want to recognize this young man for his hard work and dedication to reaching his goal.  Congratulations and continued success Anders.

Jameal York (Chabot College, Edison High) signs to NCAA DII Southwest Baptist University

Jameal York has had a long road to earning his NCAA membership as a student-athlete.  After a stellar senior campaign at Edison High in 2009, Jameal earned Mr. Basketball by the Fresno Bee. Jameal went the National Junior College route with a stint at Western Texas College before transferring back to California for his sophomore season with Chabot College for the 2011-12 season.  At Chabot, Jameal averaged 13.8 points and 4 assists per game, and earned Honorable Mention All-Conference in the competitive Coast-North Conference.  The only thing preventing Jameal from earning his scholarship after his sophomore campaign was academics.  Jameal spent the past year getting his academics in order to qualify for an NCAA program.  Announced via facebook, "I'm a NCAA athlete now..." #NewBeginnin & "I committed to Southwest Baptist University...I'm blessed to get this second chance..."

Southwest Baptist University is located in Missouri and competes at the NCAA Division II level.

Aaron Gordon honored California's Mr. Basketball for 2nd consecutive year

State’s top honor goes to Archbishop Mitty of San Jose standout for the second consecutive year by a hair over Mater Dei’s Stanley Johnson. Gordon is only the sixth two-time winner since 1956.

Haupt led Burlingame to its first boys section title in 2012-2013.

Sonora's Francis retires from coaching boys basketball

SONORA -- For 37 years, there has been no tougher place for visiting teams to win basketball games than at Sonora High.

It was due to much more than the long drive.

If you were a fast-breaking team, the Wildcats would slow you down. If you preferred to slow it down, Sonora would beat you at your own game.

Modesto Bee - Sonora High boys basketball coach Rick Francis won more than 600 games as the boys basketball coach, the most in the Sac-Joaquin Section. Francis is retiring from coaching after 37 years, but will remain as the athletic director.

And through it all, Rick Francis was pulling the strings.

Francis, 64, officially stepped down as the Wildcats' head coach on Tuesday after 42 years coaching in the Sonora program and 37 as varsity head coach, during which he compiled a 651-394 record.

According to Cal-Hi Sports, the 651 wins are the most in the history of the Sac-Joaquin Section. The only other coach ever to eclipse 600 wins in section play was Vanden's Jim Boyd, who retired in 1997 after notching 614 wins.

"I just think it's time," Francis said. "It's been a great run and I enjoyed every minute of it. I got a little tired this year and I thought a lot about this since the end of the seasons, then discussed it the with family and administration."
