Gary Williams (Castlemont High) gets offer from Arizona State

Gary Williams has put in some serious work since his days at Castlemont High in Oakland.  Seemingly  under the radar he went to Westwind Prep after his senior season in Oakland.  He then earned a scholarship to one of the nations top Juco programs, Indian Hills where he had a successful freshman campaign.  He has transferred to Midland Junior College in Texas for his sophomore season and has already received an offer from Arizona State.  Congratulations to Gary and continued success!

California Juco; never too late for a 2nd chance (or 3rd..)

It's always a pleasure to see once 'big names' in the prep world suiting up for California Juco programs in a second chance to get back into school and on the basketball radar.  Last weekend at Skyline College I was able to witness a couple 'blasts from the past' suiting up at the Nor Cal Juco Jamboree.  I wasn't able to see all the games or see all the rosters, but the two players that I noticed that fit this category most were Eugene Crockett (Sac City) and Matt Simpkins (Chabot).

Eugene Crockett
Eugene Crockett played his senior season at Sacramento High school back in 05-06'.  Looking him up I was able to find out he was offered by Santa Clara University and University of San Francisco out of high school.  According to Maxpreps he was listed as 6'9" 240 as a senior back in 2006.  My first thought when I saw him on the court was that he was the younger brother of YouTube legend Kimbo Slice.  Just a massive force, but seemingly a bit older than the rest of the players on the court.  Not much available on why he never played anywhere up to this point, but looking forward to seeing him on the court this year at Sac City.

Kyle Luckett at Chabot

California Juco is no stranger to players in their mid 20's and beyond getting back on the scene.  Siskiyious College had a few players on the roster last year in their mid 20's; Treece Lynch and leading scorer Watkins Williams graduated in 06' and 07' respectively, from high schools in Florida.  Modesto Junior College and Columbia College both used the efforts of John Potter who was 40 years old during his second season as a Columbia Claim Jumper in 2010.  John Potter had an interesting story all his own. Then their was Kyle Luckett, the 7 footer that played for Chabot College as a 23 year old freshman after going undrafted in the 2005 NBA draft out of high school. Luckett then went on to play professionally after his sophomore season as a Chabot Gladiator.  Perhaps this is a foreshadow of the future of Matt Simpkins, who suited up for Chabot at the Jamboree last weekend.

Simpkins was suspended indefinitely by John Calipari while at the University of Memphis in 09'. After bouncing around to a couple of different schools Simpkins completely fell off the map until his surprise return last weekend.  Simpkins was also offered out of high school by UCONN, Arizona, and USC, but comes to the Cali Juco ranks with a reputation that most coaches wouldn't consider to be favorable.  Ranked as a top 80 prospect by rivals, Simpkins was ranked higher than current pros Quincy Acy and Miles Plumlee.  It would be a great to see this former Bay Area prepster make a turnaround and reach the potential that we all once knew he was capable.  Potential is only a compliment for so long, however, until that word begins to take on a stigma all its own.

Looking forward to seeing more of the rosters from the Juco showcases this summer.  Will have more reports and articles as information begins to become public.

Report from Nor Cal Juco Jamboree at Skyline College

Was in attendance for several games this weekend and saw a few teams that had promising talent.
Teams to note:  (I did not have a roster since that was available only for NCAA certified coaches so am going off only who I reconized)
CCSF always loaded.  Dulani Robinson and Kanu Aju are back for what looks like another promising year.
Chabot had a few recognizable names, Matt Simpkins and Paris Davis.
Reedley College only had 6 players but looked very good.
College of Sequoias was very athletic.  Looking like they have upgraded since last years successful squad.
CRC is looking like another NorCal contender with the addition of Daiveon Leverett and co.
Yuba looking solid as always.  Noticed Jo Jo Zamora running the point and big man Isaiah Jones from Center on their squad.
Napa Valley seemed very organized and played well together.  Lots of shooters on this squad.
Missed several of the later games.  For a better report check out the link below for norcalbasektball.blogspots report via Kevin McCarthy

'Poaching' at the Junior College ranks

With several junior college basketball showcases coming up I'm already hearing from several sources of the growing 'poaching' epidemic at California Junior Colleges.  The CCAAA has rules established to try and minimize this dilemma, since players must pass 12 credits at a school before they are eligible to play as a transfer.  This rule also limits the amount of summer credits to 8.  Therefore the athlete must be enrolled before summer and have passed a minimum of 4 credit hours to be allowed to play in the upcoming season.  If this is not done, then the player must sit out a year before being eligible to play as a transfer at a California Community College.
It goes without saying that not every player and coach are going to get along.  And that at times players will seek out greener pastures.   Their are also financial and family issues that arise out of a kids control that may make such a transfer suitable as well.  However, when coaches at competing schools call a player directly to persuade him to transfer this is what I consider 'poaching'.  It is against several rules that are defined by the CCAAA to contact a player in such a case.   Coaches are not allowed to contact players out of their recruitable district unless the student-athlete has contacted them first and expressed interest.  Even then their are rules that minimize what the coach can do to persuade this player to attend their school as an athlete.  It is also clearly defined in the rules that a coach cannot initiate recruiting a player that is already attending and participating in their sport at another California Community College.  However, with what I have been hearing through the grapevine lately, these rules are completely neglected by certain programs on a regular basis.
Recruiting players is always a battle during the recruiting stage.  This is part of the life of a coach at the college level.  If a player wants to leave on their own free will and starts contacting programs on their own this is understandable.  But when a program has put in all the upfront work to get the commitment of a player and is 'poached' by another this is not only against the rules, but is completely unethical.
I guess if I were to use an anology, it's a lot like the dating or bar scene.  You do all the work to break the ice with a woman and get her interested, then a friend jumps in and capitalizes on all your guts and hard work.  Effective?  Maybe.  Should you feel any guilt by capitalizing on someone else's work? Guess that just depends on the type of person you are.
It seems that now the National Junior College Athletic Association is jumping in the mix.  However, they do NOT have the same rules that apply to the California Community College Athletic Association. They can recruit and contact any player they want at pretty much any school in California.  I have seen some things recently that have gotten under my skin.  I've seen a California Junior College coach give a kid an opportunity, a kid who nobody wanted based on his high school career.  I've seen a coach work with the kid and help him develop into a great prospect only to see National Junior Colleges jump in and recruit the player away after a very successful freshman season.  These same players were also being contacted by California schools in complete violation of the rules.
Since this is a blog I felt that this was a good time to put some if this out there.  Won't mention names or programs or players specifically; just the possible epidemic that is evolving in the state of California as I'm sure is evolving at all levels and all sports.
More to come on transfers and player movement in the weeks to come.  Wish everyone luck out there these next couple months with not only recruiting, but retaining your current student-athletes.
